The rainforest is divided vertically into several layers (forest floor, understory, canopy and emergent). Above the canopy are the emergent trees soaring up to 100 feet above the canopy. Each layer has an associated micro-ecosystem that supports distinctive biodiversity. An estimated fifty to ninety percent of animal habitat exists in the trees! Through the process of photosynthesis, sunlight is filtered through the billions of leaves and converted into pure chemical energy. It is often these little things that we take for granted; such as this aforementioned ecosystem service that provides the basic energy source for virtually all living organisms. Today, for Earth Day 2017, I hope you find gratitude for the trees and all of the life that they are undeniably supporting. Please help by doing your part in working to protect the remaining forest that we have. There are many organizations you can donate or volunteer with that are doing amazing things including- The Nature Conservancy , MESCOT, The Xerces Society, Friends of Trees & Defenders of Wildlife.
